Project Summary

ALP ENvironmental COMmunication is an integrated approach for protected areas managers to ensure common planning and communication on environmental management through regular exchange and training, and to improve the public awareness of environmental issues. On one hand, the project is based on exchange of experience and evaluation of management measures, which will lead to integrated strategies for the protection of alpine natural and cultural resources and for sustainable land use. On the other hand, the development of common communication tools based on an interactive approach of public information in protected areas will strengthen public awareness of mountain ecological systems. It includes an interactive data exchange platform used for data and know-how exchange between protected area managers. The integrated approach is complemented by common media activities for an higher transparency of alpine environmental management strategies and by international professional training programmes.

Project Objectives

Overall objective is the improvement of thematic and spatial alpine networks of protected areas. Especially, the following points will be achieved: • a better and coordinated management of natural resources and definition of common alpine management approaches : common seminars and exchange of experiences • use of common methodologies, databases and indicators for the management of natural resources • initialize a long term professional and educational training programme on environmental management, alpine and European environmental conservation issues • development of long-lasting common instruments for information and communication including internet-based communication platforms Furthermore, ALPENCOM will develop a common communication policy towards the general public based on: • elaboration of a single communication system for the visitor centers of protected areas and linked institutions • joint tools and strategies for a better information of media and public about nature protection and vulnerability of mountainous ecological systems and the importance of conservation of cultural landscapes with an active socio-economical structure.
