Project Summary

Extreme meteorological events originate in one part of the Alps and proceed over or along the alpine crest. The effects of these events are inundations, landslides, avalanches, Föhn storms etc., which do not occur outside of the Alps in this form. The forecasting of these events is limited by the lack of structured communication between the weather services in these areas and the lack of online available data before and during these events.
The object of METEORISK is:
- to establish a network of online automatic meteorological stations densifying the existing station network.
- The improved interpretation of different regional models and radar data of the area.
- Optimized communication, common training and networking between the forecasters.
- The improvement of the interaction with the civil protection authorities and the public through adequate instruction material.
- A statistical analysis to quantify the occurrence of extreme events in the different part of the Alps.

Project Objectives

Extreme weather conditions are an increasing thread for the living conditions in the Alps due to the Climate Change, which in the Alps is most predominantly visible in the frequency of floods, storms, avalanches and dry and hot periods which can cause forest fires. The preparedness of the population and the decision making authorities needs an improvement in the sense of problem understanding, consequences to be taken in extreme situation and general adaptation to the needs of a changed environment concerning tourist activities, use of the landscape and transport possibilities in the case of interrupted traffic connections. The collaboration between the different weather services has been significantly improved, as very different software techniques within the services had been harmonized to a high degree. An informal collaboration between the different civil protections services as users of the project has taken place via the website, which displays online warnings in real time.
The object of Meteorisk is:

Project Achievements

The common website of the project www.meteorisk.info is the primary and most visible platform for the project results. 24 h/365 days the actual warnings are displayed and updated according to the necessities of the meteorological situation. Behind this are a series of seminars which increased the cooperation capacities between the different partners and gave training and expertise to more than 200 participants. The database of 1254 online meteorological stations of a very high standard is unique in the Alps and will be exploited by further studies. The fact that theses station network came together by cooperation with other institutions like energy providers, avalanche services and hydrological services results in a minimum use of public money and avoidance of redundant systems. First brochures with practical information about extreme weather phenomena for the public have already been disseminated, more about the behaviour in critical situations will follow.
