Project Summary | Forests as prevailing alpine ecosystem type play a crucial role for a sustainable development in the Alps. Pollutants endanger this natural heritage and its functions. Particularly the impact of highly toxic and accumulating organic pollutants (POPs) has been underestimated for a long time. The Alps seem to be a major sink for long-range transported and globally distributed POPs. As a lead project MONARPOP will assess for the first time the load of POPs in the Alpine flora and establish on the basis of its results conclusions and implementation steps to reduce this load.
Project Objectives | - Assessment of POPs pollution in the Alpine environment - Exploration of possibilities to reduce POPs concentrations
