Project Summary | Every 8th ton of the international trade has to traverse the Alps. The transalpine traffic accessibility is essential for Europe. Catastrophes in the Alp tunnels and traffic contrasts show the European dimension of these problems. The raise of road traffic within the alpine region cause an escalation of CO2 emissions, noise pollution and use of road infrastructure which is not designed for the actual traffic volume. The "alpine" policy of traffic has abandoned the scope of single nationalities and reached European dimensions. The new focus for the solution is "thinking in network and systems, not in axes”. The project will:- create a sustainable mobility concept and offers to master the transalpine freight traffic by using existing (railway) infrastructure- install a prototype of an information and quality assurance system for a better execution of the transalpine freight traffic on rail taking into account the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for logistic and transport solution- create an overall supply for the target group and verify the system in 2 pilot cases- meet the political aims of the ESCP and the "Alpine Convention" for sustainable transport solutions.
Project Objectives | Project focus is the traffic of economical centers among the alpine space including the interface to neighbor regions. The main objective is to enhance the acceptance of the railway as alternative and complemented transport media to prevent the alpine space from an economical, environmental and traffic disaster according to European programs (e.g. Alps Convention).
