Project Summary

The historical pattern and socio-economic system of towns and villages in Alpine space are important both for local culture and European identity The aims of the project are to protect and enhance that common heritage, improving the knowledge on characteristic features of historical alpine settlements and promoting integrated sustainable policies for interventions, taking into account different aspects of cultural, historical, social, economical and environmental identity, according to the spatial and economic context. Main project activities: 1) cataloguing and cartographic representation (data bases, Geographic Information Systems) of Alpine Cultural heritage components, based on harmonised methods; 2) defining harmonised analytical methods to evaluate strengths and weakness (SWOT analysis); 3) promoting pro-active policies to protect and enhance cultural heritage components (best practices, guidelines); 4) spreading out positive experiences and supporting integrated policies using information society technologies.

Project Objectives

The significance of historical, territorial and socio-economic configuration of little towns and villages in Alpine space is not recognised in an adequate way in Europe and in the Alpine region. Trans-national problems are:
- dispersed and unbalanced knowledge on typical historical settlements and alpine spatial structure with loss of common identity and difficulties to share experiences;
- the role of cultural heritage components in regional development is not recognised in a adequate way;
- lack of comprehensive and integrated information on cultural heritage;
- Improper, underestimated and non sustainable use of resources, cultural infrastructure and historical settlements;
- loss of cultural identity and historical heritage (buildings, settlements, rural monuments, traditional building materials and techniques)
- Increasing of unbalanced development and disparities inside Alpine regions;
- lack of adequate and harmonised information on cultural heritage elements at EU level (DG Regio, ESPON).
Project results will be applied in the regions involved and will be available for all European mountain and rural regions; partnership, knowledge and know-how will be improved through harmonised data bases and GIS. Moreover, information will be made available to DG Regio and authorities involved in ESPON; local identities, promoting sustainable activities in historical centres, will be strengthened as expressed in the ESDP; Alpine identity will be promoted by best practices and positive experiences, using information society technologies.
