Project Summary | The European Network NATURA 2000 demands the long term surveillance of natural habitats. As established in Berchtesgaden National Park, aerial photographs provide replicable and standardized methods for landscape surveillance on a scale of 1:10.000.Main objective of the project is to develop a transnational spatial database, which supports the analysis of alpine landscape, its structures, diversity and long term changes, particularly for NATURA 2000 habitats.The project activities comprise the surface covering census of landscape structures for protected areas throughout the alpine space, the delimitation of landscape structures by a common interpretation code and the compilation of census results in a transnational database. Integration of additional and more differentiated local data on special subjects into the common database will be possible. Analysis of landscape diversity and surveillance of habitat changes will contribute to a coordinated alpine planning and management. | |
Project Objectives | The preservation of natural and cultural landscape diversity is an essential demand resulting from the Alpine Convention. The protected areas of the alpine space are the preservation centres for the most valuable habitats and an important part of the European NATURA 2000 network. The preservation task for these protected habitats requires the long term surveillance on landscape level. HABITALP will contribute to this objective by the surface covering census of landscape diversity in 11 protected areas and its evaluation for surveillance and management. Our objective is to develop standardized methods for the monitoring of landscape structures which are tested for 11 partners and suitable for transfer to other alpine areas. The heterogeneity of the project group (4 languages, 5 countries, 11 partners) and the complex scientific issues will demand efficient structures for management and coordination. | |
Project Achievements | Digital and geo-referenced aerial photos are available for 5 project partners and still in production for the remaining 6 partners. The previously existing interpretation key has been enlarged to meet the potential alpine demands. Interpretations are running in 5 partner areas and contributing to the practical refining of the habitat key. First relationships of HABITALP to NATURA 2000 habitats as well as evaluations of the landscape structure have been realized. The set up of the transnational database was initialized by the basic decisions on a common mapping system for geographic results and a web-map server constellation. Two project websites have been installed. A digital archive of PR products is accessible for download. Project partners and numerous external experts are cooperating intensely. The means of communication have been optimised by the project management and are supported by the Alpine Network of Protected Areas. | |
