ALPTREES

Sustainable use and management of non native trees in the alpine region

Activity A.T4.1 Stakeholder engagement

D.T.4.1.1 Stakeholder Analysis

In Central Europe, discussion in forest management has increasingly focused on how humans can assist these adaptation /migration processes, especially when important forest ecosystem services are at risk. One option is to introduce non-native tree species to help forest ecosystems adapt to climate change (Frischbier et al. 2019) Non-native tree species can support the adaptation of European forests and urban areas to climate change, but simultaneously entail risks for biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Many efforts have already been undertaken to manage these risks, but neither European or national/regional recommendations and strategies for non-native tree species management exist in the Alpine Space that consider the challenges of climate change yet. The European Alpine Space has important potentials for dynamic development, but is facing major challenges at various levels including the pan-Alpine, regional and local levels as well as in cross-border areas. These challenges refer for instance to the specific geographical position, globalization, demographic trends, climate change and its impact on the environment, biodiversity, territorial pattern of activities and living conditions.

The live event was organized by Development agency Sora in cooperation with ALPTREES project partners Slovenian Forestry Institute (SFI) and the Municipality of Maribor.

It was implemented by the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation who also were responsible for the workshop design. The ALPTREES National Workshop was held with stakeholders and representatives in Slovenia in Slovenian language. Participants in the workshop were all experts and researchers in the field of forestry, nature conservation and horticulture or representatives of municipalities, who have experiences and interests in sustainable management and work with non-native tree species.

The opinions and experiences on NNT from the Slovenian participants are presented in the Minutes of the Slovenian Stakeholder Workshop published bellow.

The workshop was opened by Gašper Kleč (director of Development agency Sora), Katharina Lapin (Alptrees project leader, BFW Vienna), Aleksander Marinšek (ALPTREES project leader for Slovenian Forestry Institute) and Teo Hrvoje Oršanič (director of Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation). Professionals and researchers gave lectures from different areas - Tina Trampuš (Leader of the EUSALP Action Group 7, Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation) presented different views on NNT. - Robert Brus (Biotechnical faculty, Department of Forestry and Renewable Forest Resources)spoke about NNT and their potential for Slovenian forest the light of climate change. - Sonja Rozman (Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation) introduced the nature conservation aspect on NNT. - Lena Marion (Tisa enterprise) - Maks Merela (Biotechnical faculty, Department of wood science and technology) discussed about usefulness of invasive alien tree species from the urban environment.

D.T4.1.4 1st Gorenjska Regional Workshop on Non-native Tree Species, held on-line on 25th November 2020

Development agency Sora together with Slovenian Forestry Institute and external expert Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation organised on-line 1st Gorenjska Regional Workshop on Non-native Tree Species on 25th November 2020.

The 1st Gorenjska Regional Workshop on NNT brought together experts from different fields - forestry, nature conservation, horticulture, municipalities, education sector, development agencies, etc. - and at the Regional Workshop we gained interested insides from participant’s experiences with NNT in the forest areas as well in the urban areas in the cities.

The Participants’ knowledge and experiences on usage and management of NNT are gathered in the Minutes of the 1st Gorenjska Regional Workshop on NNT attached bellow. Together with participants we prepared the Conclusions of the Regional Workshop on NNT that are also listed in the Minutes of 1st Gorenjska Regional Workshop bellow.
